Abstract
Mucormyccsis is a rare and fulminating opportunistic infection that occurs almost
exclusively in immunocompromised patients. Its incidence has been increasing in recent
years.
Authors experienced a case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis involving ileocecal area
in a 71 year-old female patient during induction chemotherapy for acute myelocytic
leukemia. On the 11th day of induction chemotherapy, she complained of pain on right
lower quadrant of abdomen. Under the impression of periappendiceal abscess, the
exploratormy laparotomy was performed. Post-operative pathologic findings revealed
nonseptate, broad hyphae consistent with mucoraceae. She recovered from it completely
with surgical resection of the lesion followed by amphotericin-B therapy. About 11
months after diagnosis, she expired from the relapsed acute myelocytic leukemia.
